How do you take your coffee?
Dark, black, strong. Love espresso.
Tell us a little about the experience of making the work you have featured in REALITY BEACH.
I’ve been really interested in trying to merge my work in digital collage (couple examples attached if you’d like to include) with my poetry.Jack Mueller, one of my mentors, has had a profound effect on the way I continue my work. Jack is constantly making… he’ll have a stack of index cards and will be spilling out what he calls compression sketches… quick line drawings, ink blotches, scribbles… with a line or short phrase… he always says, “Obey the emerging form.”
Tell us about the poems you’ve been writing.
Last year I published a chapbook length serial poem called July. I thought it was complete, but continued to write the poem. It’s continuing to evolve and shape shift… the Supplemental Notes you guys were kind enough to publish are actually part of the larger manuscript, too… titled, The Alphabet That Never Recovers. There seem to be many chapbook length tangents, like Supplemental Notes and July, that are somehow connected… and if I’m completely honest, I’m not sure how… but they include some other sections such as The Alphabet’s Book of Numbers, which is written entirely in numerological code, The Alphabet’s Revised Manual of Cultivated Plants, and curious meditation called Mollusk. At this point I’m trying to figure out if I should publish these pieces in digestible lengths or wait and present them as an unruly wooly mammoth.
Where can we buy some?
EDITORS NOTE: The Alphabet’s Book of Colors: Supplemental Notes for Philipp Otto Runge’s Die Farbenkugel, as translated by Kyle Harvey… will soon be released by REALITY BEACH as a deluxe broadside set.
What’s the last thing you burned?
Daily, I burn incense while meditating… peace in my heart, peace in the world. Aside from that… frozen pizza that I was making for my kids.
Where is your beach?
North Beach, San Francisco.
What’s the best line on the fifth page of the poetry book closest to you?
“On the stage it was shown: a moving obscurity.” –Robert Duncan, The Opening of the Field
What is your favorite dance move? Please Describe.
The wallflower. I’ve always wanted to be more comfortable dancing. I remain extremely uncomfortable.
What’s the ebb reveal?
The ebb reveals further obscurity. The ebb reveals truth. The ebb reveals self, reveals July. Reveals our faults as they lie. The ebb reveals the opening of the field. Ambush is revealed by the ebb. The ebb reveals the structure of rime, reveals spooky action at a distance. The ebb prevails in all emerging form.
P.S. I love Reality Beach
